☆ Taliban ban women from working for domestic, foreign NGOs

The Taliban government on Saturday ordered all foreign and domestic non-governmental groups in Afghanistan to suspend employing women, allegedly because some female employees didn't wear the Islamic headscarf correctly. It was not immediately clear if the order applies to all women or only Afghan women working at the NGOs. More details were not immediately available on the latest Taliban ban amid concerns that it could be a stepping-stone to more restrictive measures against women in Afghanistan. Also Saturday, Taliban security forces used a water cannon to disperse women protesting the ban on university education for women in the western city of Herat, eyewitnesses said. Afghan women have since demonstrated in major cities against the ban, a rare sign of domestic protest since the Taliban seized power last year.

Dec 7 (Reuters) - BNP Paribas SA (BNPP.PA) has appointed several senior executives to its Global Markets Americas division, the European bank said on Wednesday, in a move to further consolidate its presence in the United States. The French bank appointed former Morgan Stanley executive Kunal Maini as the co-head of Global Macro - Americas and he will be responsible for globalizing the US Rates franchise. In addition, BNP also hired a string of executives to strengthen its credit portfolio at a time when global fixed income markets have come under immense pressure from soaring inflation and outsized interest rate hikes. London CNN Business —The United Kingdom faces a “lost decade” of growth if action isn’t taken to address slumping business investment and worker shortages, a leading business lobby group has warned. “Britain is in stagflation — with rocketing inflation, negative growth, falling productivity and business investment. The CBI expects the UK economy to shrink by 0.4% in 2023 — a significant downgrade from the growth of 1% it predicted in June. The group expects business investment to fall from the middle of next year, leaving it 9% below its pre-pandemic level at the end of 2024. “We cannot afford to have another decade where both [investment and productivity] are stagnant,” Danker said.

But among critics, their appearance has evoked parallels with the civil war when the state collapsed, militias controlled the streets and Beirut split into cantons. Such criticisms are rejected by Gemayel, a lawmaker in the Kataeb Party whose father, Bashir, led the main Christian militia in the civil war until he was assassinated in 1982 after being elected president. Lebanon's sectarian parties disarmed at the end of the war, bar Hezbollah, which kept its arsenal to fight Israel. Witnessing Arab women flourish on the small screen, showcasing their talents and breaking through the presumption that they are oppressed is widely significant. That is not to say Arab women live in a utopia in the Middle East. The implication is that these Arab women have no depth to their character other than their attire. Just as common are images of Arab women living as concubines in harems waiting to please men. But the achievements of the past week should help to break down the stereotypes surrounding Arab women and inspire them to dream big.
